Evan Deterling first trained to draw and ink classic typeface letterforms in 1984, mentored by a ‘cold type’ era veteran in pursuing his design degree. The following year he was working with early computer vector programs at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design, creating free-form digital typography. Over a three-decade career as a brand designer and an editorial art director for Conde Nast, he produced a wide variety of letterforms, wordmarks and display for brands and publications. He also curated licensed typefaces from a spectrum of type foundries—and often dealt with the frustration in finding the perfect, distinctly uncommon typeface.
In 2014, this inspired him to acquire the technical knowledge needed to develop complete professional typefaces with modern Opentype functionality and broad multilingual support. He released his first display typeface family, Gaffeur, in 2023, followed by his extended text family, Newsam in early 2024. In 2024, after forty years of work with typographic design, Evan launched Typonym as a focused studio providing a limited selection of unique, widely useful retail fonts and bespoke signature typefaces for sophisticated brands and publishers, drawing on a lifetime of experience and any flat surface within reach. Typonym is based in Berlin, Germany, where he currently resides.
