Buy NowLATIN QUARTER is a spiky, bouncy font with triangular serifs and an uneven baseline. There’s an upper and lowercase version and a large and small caps version for greater flexibility, and lots of alternate characters for a more hand-lettered feel.
LATIN QUARTER was inspired by the titles for the 1954 film Carmen Jones. These were the first film credits designed by Saul Bass; the lettering was created by Harold Adler.
Triangular serifs like these are called “latin” because they are like those in carved Roman inscriptions. Paris’s Latin Quarter is named for the language of the university in the neighborhood. Carmen Jones was adapted from a French opera about people in Spain, reimagined as African Americans in the South.
