Television and other shared-screen interfaces have a different problem: the viewer may be several meters away, scanning menus, imagery and moving content. Tight spacing and delicate details that look polished on a laptop can become cramped or indistinct from the couch.
GGX88 was designed for exactly that environment. It began as a Swiss-style sans for a streaming set-top box, with generous spacing, simplified forms and proportions adjusted for television viewing. The original rasterization constraints have long since changed, but the resulting design remains useful: neutral interface typography with enough breathing room to work at a distance.
Streaming television is its most direct application. Subscription video services, FAST channels, broadcaster apps and sports-streaming platforms need browse screens, episode information, channel guides, playback overlays and profile menus that can be scanned quickly without competing with cover art or video. GGX88 keeps that typography calm and familiar while its open rhythm helps titles, categories and supporting information remain distinct across a large screen.
Console and cloud-gaming platforms face much the same problem. Game libraries, subscription services and living-room launchers are filled with cover art, titles, achievement notices and settings. GGX88 works as the interface around the games rather than trying to look like one.
Hotel-room television, resort entertainment systems and cruise-cabin media add guest services, restaurant listings, property information and channel guides to the same across-the-room viewing condition. Large-screen fitness systems use similar typography for class names, timers, exercise labels and interval notices that must remain readable while the user is moving.
The same principles extend to information-rich digital signage such as cinema program boards, conference schedules, visitor-center displays and museum media screens, as well as broadcast graphics that need to sit quietly over photography and moving imagery.
GGX88 was built for text viewed from across the room rather than across a desk. The technology around that original brief has changed; the viewing distance has not.
